Resource Coach

Reports to: TREE Program Director

Position Summary:

 The Resource Coach works as a member of an interdisciplinary team, including the TREE Program Director, TREE Design Team, Mental Health Counselor and the school administration, teachers, and staff. The position is responsible for providing classroom and school team consultation, professional development, and coaching to implement a trauma informed approach and ensure successful program implementation at the pilot school. The Resource Coach will provide individualized, classroom-based coaching to support teachers in building supportive relationships with students and implementing and sustaining trauma-informed and SEL practices that promote student voice and empowerment and student well being. This position works with administrative, instructional, and non-instructional staff to develop a holistic approach that emphasizes emotional wellness for staff and students, improving the overall school climate and implementing trauma-informed systems to reduce re-traumatization, promote student and staff resilience and increase positive academic and non-academic outcomes for students. The coach provides critical thought-partnership, professional development, facilitation and consultation to school staff to support the school’s development of mindsets, systems, practices, strategic planning, interventions and partnerships needed to effectively implement the TREE process model.


The TREE Project is a grant supported, three to five year pilot project on poverty and trauma informed school transformation. This pilot focuses on working with partner rural schools – children, teachers, school leaders, and community members - in Washington County, Maine to build competencies and confidence to mitigate poverty related barriers that negatively affect learning and behavior outcomes for students. Based on successful completion of pilot activities and the results achieved in pilot schools, the goal of TREE is to extend TREE principles and concepts to other rural schools in Maine and beyond. The foundational research and inspiration for this project is the work of Pam Cantor, MD and the Turnaround for Children Project located in urban schools in New York and Washington D.C.

Transforming Rural Experience in Education (TREE) is a collaborative, place-based educational initiative that builds capacity within rural communities for students, teachers, administrators, families and community members to create healthy and supportive relationships and contexts where all children can thrive and achieve academic and civic success. TREE’s innovative approach draws on cutting-edge neuroscientific research and best practices in human development and education. The program’s objective is to foster resilience and improve the well- being of young people, their families, and the wider community, by addressing the predictable and recurring barriers to healthy youth development and learning that exist in high poverty rural schools and communities. TREE understands that adversity, stress, and trauma are not just individual mental health issues, but also systemic, generational issues that are most effectively addressed by thoughtful, informed, and committed action on the part of all.

Our focus group conversations in schools throughout Washington County tell us what is needed most are tools and resources to (a) meet basic needs (mental health and wellness and material resources); (b) support student development (social and emotional learning (SEL) and voice, agency, and empowerment); and (c) improve instruction and leadership (instructional strategies/capacity and leadership practices/development). We believe that by working with schools and communities to build relational capacity in these three domains, TREE will help create socially and emotionally safe educational environments where all children can learn, teachers are supported to meet student needs, and where administrators can support schools that influence the health of their community. 

 Key Accountabilities: Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide direct consultation and coaching to school administration teachers, and staff to ensure successful implementation of the TREE's process model.
  • Support teachers in developing trauma informed classrooms, implementing SEL curriculum, enhancing student voice, and improving student engagement.
  • Collaborate with outside mental health providers to increase the school’s mental health services capacity for onsite delivery.
  • Facilitate school-wide data collection in collaboration with the TREE Design Team, TREE Director, and TREE Evaluator, to support tracking and evaluation of program implementation at current and future schools.
  • Deliver, plan, and facilitate small and large group professional development sessions; lead professional development sessions for teachers and support staff to build capacity to create and maintain an effective learning environment and improve teaching and learning.
  • Serve as on-site representative of the TREE program, ensuring understanding of the model, its benefits and services among all on-site staff.
  • Participate in the ongoing development and refinement of the TREE process model in collaboration with the school and the TREE Design Team.
  • Collaborate with school leaders to implement the TREE process model to enhance conditions for growing and learning, improve school climate, raise school-wide academic performance, access mental health and professional development services, and better engage families in the life of the school.
  • Cultivate strong, purposeful relationships with all school stakeholders, including teachers, school leaders, staff, parents, and community members to better meet the needs of all learners.
  • Collaboration with principals, teachers, and other team members to establish effective school staff teams and facilitate team meetings to address students’ behavioral, academic, and social and emotional issues in the school-based environment.
  • Be knowledgeable about and have awareness of trauma (and how it relates to school culture), the effects of poverty, resilience, adverse child and community experiences, school climate, school mental health frameworks, social and emotional learning, growth mindset, experiential learning, mindfulness, and the whole child approach.
  • Recognize and resolve potential problems. Confer with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems that arise promptly.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned in a spirit of collaboration and teamwork.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Education, Mental Health, or related field; advanced degree is a plus, professional experience in Education, Mental Health, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years experience in an educational setting that includes proven experience coaching and developing other teachers to improve their classroom management and instructional practice.
  • Demonstrated professional success in rural public schools.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with exemplary track records as innovative and experienced school, district or educational leaders who have mentored and supported school staff and leaders effectively.
  • In depth experience working with teachers to implement best practices for highly diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing academic and behavioral interventions and supports.
  • Knowledge and experience fostering change in school and/or district environments and successful experience leading diverse teams toward significant change initiatives.
  • Effective change facilitator familiar with the Washington County and rural poverty, and demonstrated ability to successfully navigate and overcome barriers present in these environments.
  • Exceptional relationship builder able to forge connections and gain trust from a wide range of stakeholders and personality types and motivate others to meet ambitious goals.
  • Deep understanding of poverty and trauma and a commitment to equity informed school practices.
  • Knowledge and experience to apply appropriate methodology to projects that have well-defined requirements and deliverables.
  • Experience living in and knowledge about rural Maine communities.
  • An understanding of Native American culture and values and the ability to work effectively and respectfully within Native communities and with Native people.
  • In-depth understanding of educational systems and school leadership.
  • Excellent written and spoken communications skills; adept at motivating, inspiring, and conveying key points both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • An active learner with a desire to grow and learn.

Indirect Report to:              TREE Steering Committee and TREE Design Team

Position Type:                        Full-time salaried, benefitted position.

Position Requirements: 

  • Able to use personal vehicle for travel to a pilot school located in Western Washington County
  • Starting in January 2018 applicants can expect to spend 4 days/week in their given school site, with a fifth day per week traveling to CCLC in Trescott, Maine or participating in or developing trainings, consulting, or providing outreach throughout Washington County.
