Kami is a great add-on to Google Drive for collaborating on PDF documents. It allows you to highlight, comment, and draw over any PDF document. It is CCLC's preferred platform for collaborating on PDF documents.
Please note that Kami will not work with Team Drives, so please save your files in your CCLC or personal Google Drive, and not any of the CCLC's Team Drives, if you want to use Kami with them.
You need to perform these steps once to install Kami the first time you use it.
After the first time, you can skip to Using Kami to open the document in the future.
If you can't access Kami, then follow the steps again.
Click the link to the document you would like to view, or open it in Google Drive. You probably received the link in an email.
If there's an Open with button above the document like in figure 1, then skip to Step 4.
If you see an Open with Kami button like in figure 2, then Kami is already installed and you can skip to Using Kami.
If you don't see a button in that area, then click the Sign In button (figure 3) on the upper right and sign in to your CCLC Google account, or your personal Google account.
Please contact IT support if you cannot access your CCLC Google account by clicking the "How can we help?" button on the lower right. This only applies to CCLC staff.
After you've signed in, the Open with button should appear (figure 1).
Click the Open with button and then click Connect more apps.
Click the search bar in the upper right, and type "kami". Then click the + Connect button on the first result.
Click the Open with Kami button above the document.
This will open Kami in a new tab. Click Allow Google Drive to continue, and follow the steps in the pop-up window. You may need to login to your Google account again, use the same one that you logged in with before.
You should now see your document in the Kami window, which should look like this at the top:
You're done installing Kami! Continue to the next section to learn how to use it.
If you're having trouble, then contact IT Support by clicking "How can we help?" on the lower right.
1. Open the document
If you just completed the steps above and Kami is already open, skip to Step 2.
Click the link to the document you would like to view, or open it in Google Drive. You probably received the link in an email. Once the document is open, click the Open with Kami button above it.
2. Left toolbar
The bar on the left has several tools available. The first four are the ones you will use frequently:
The select tool is the basic mouse cursor.
Highlight, Strikethrough, and Underline
Highlight, Strikethrough, and Underline can be used on any text on the page, using different colors.
To highlight, strikethrough, or underline text, click the appropriate tool, select your color, and then drag the cursor to select the text you want to highlight, strikethrough, or underline.
The comment tool can be used to comment on specific items on the page. To use it, click the Comment Tool, then select what text or item you want to comment on by dragging the cursor over it, and enter your comment:
You can also reply to other's comments:
There are other tools available under these first four tools. You can explore what they are by hovering over each of them. Most of them are for editing the document, rather than markup.
The menu in the top right corner has several functions, including jumping to pages, changing the page view, undoing and redoing, properties, and more.
Hopefully you now have a good idea of how to use Kami for PDF markup and collaboration. You can always click the "How can we help?" button in the bottom right if you need assistance using Kami, or for any other IT support.
