This summer, the Cobscook Community Learning Center is offering kids the chance to climb a mountain, canoe a twenty-mile long lake, carry everything they need on their backs, and to feel tired and exhilarated after a full day on the trail. The CCLC’s “Maine Expedition” consists of a fifteen-day excursion into the wilderness for kids ages eleven to fifteen.
“The purpose of the Maine Expedition is to create a community in which each person learns to enjoy being in the wilderness, learns about the natural history of Maine, and becomes a member of an expedition group that lives and works well together,” explains Program Director Kara McCrimmon. “We want to offer young people the opportunity to try something that maybe they’ve never tried before.”
Those who join this amazing journey will begin at the Cobscook Community Learning Center on the shores of Whiting Bay in Trescott, Maine. For the first three days participants will get to know one another, learn how to use the gear that will be used on the trip, and practice hiking and canoeing skills. Then the group will load up the CCLC’s new expedition bus and travel to the Bigelow Mountains where they will strap on backpacks for a five-day hike. The next leg of the journey (after a day of showers and reloading supplies) will take place on the West Branch of the Penobscot River north of Moosehead Lake, where the group will enjoy a five day, sixty-mile canoe trip down the river and across Chesuncook Lake.
“We’re really excited about this new program,” says CCLC Executive Director Alan Furth. “It represents a great opportunity for kids to get out in the woods and experience the joy of being outside in Maine in the summer. We live in this amazing place – it feels good to offer this program to local kids. It also represents a big step forward for the CCLC, as this is our first residential summer program for kids.”
Trip leaders will be Kara McCrimmon and Kelly Bryand, both of whom have extensive wilderness experience and are certified wilderness first responders. The cost for the trip is $1,515 per student, and full and partial scholarships are available. The Maine Expedition will run twice this summer, from July 9 – July 23 and again from July 27 – August 10.
