Citizens organizing against the proposed dump site in Marion invite the public to a viewing of the film “Trashed” followed by a discussion of the Marion proposal and their efforts to stop the new landfill. This program will take place at the Cobscook Community Learning Center on Friday, September 14 at 7 pm. All are invited.
“Trashed”, directed by Bill Kirkos, is a recent environmental documentary that focuses on North American’s fast growing waste disposal industry. The film focuses on the long and short term consequences of today’s throw-away society, and discusses possible ways to resolve many of the negative effects of our country’s waste stream.
Maine's Land Use Regulatory Commission has recently approved rezoning of a 120 acre parcel of land in TWP 14 from a General Management Subdistrict to a Commercial Industrial Development District for the development of a Construction & Demolition Debris dump site. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is now in process of reviewing the dump application. Of prime concern to organizers against the proposal is the location of the dump in the headwaters of the Gardner Lake watershed which includes the following waterways: Rocky Brook, Clifford Stream (Salmon Run), Second Gardener Lake, Gardener Lake, Case Mill Stream, East Machias River, to the Machias Bay tide waters. According to citizen organizers, “The outcome depends on the citizens of Washington County. It is up to us to get informed and take action now.”
