John Jemison, U-Maine Extension Specialist who works on issues of agricultural sustainability, will present a talk on Wednesday, December 13 at 6:30 pm entitled Slow Food: A Healthy and Sustainable Approach to Food. Admission is free for this talk, and donations are welcome.
According to Jemison, the slow food snail has made its way from northwestern Italy across the globe over the past twenty years, influencing people’s approach to food. The snail is the symbol of the slow food movement, a movement that strives to improve the food system by encouraging people to buy food that is good, clean, and just . Slow Food proponents encourage the development of food systems that produce food in a manner not harmful to the environment, at a reasonable cost, one that allows local farmers to remain in production, and that is healthy for our population. Developing a new relationship with food, buying local whenever possible, and keeping the Maine landscape in agricultural production are goals that Jemison believes Mainers can strive for locally and make a positive influence toward a sustainable future. All are invited to attend this discussion which will trace the roots of slow food and offer suggestions for improving personal and community health.
