We were excited to welcome Machias Memorial High School students and staff to the Center on Friday, October 6, 2006 during MMHS's bi-annual community volunteer day. A dozen or so eager volunteers arrived at 10 am to help build bridges on our East Stream Trail.
The trail, a mile and a half loop, connects the CCLC property to the Dennison Point Trail system owned by Maine Inland Fish and Wildlife. It crosses a number of wet spots which we've planned on building bridges for since we cleared the trail back in April 2006. The students carried in enough cedar poles, planks and tools to complete two bridging projects. It was tiring work, and everyone's energy quickly returned once folks got hammers and nails in hand. We only had enough time to build one bridge, and the students did a great job.
Later that afternoon, CCLC staff members Kara and Nan headed back out on the trail and used the remaining materials to build a second bog bridge. Both bridges look great, improve usability, and minimize possible erosion along the trail.
We still have three more bridge projects to complete. Anyone wishing to volunteer is welcome to contact Kara at the Center.
