With the foundation in place, walls up, and roof trusses installed, the Cobscook Community Learning Center’s (CCLC) next building is taking shape. Referred to as the “Community Commons”, this long-anticipated addition will house a commercial kitchen, a dining hall / large function room, and two additional classroom and art studio spaces.

According to Alan Furth, the CCLC’s Executive Director, “The Community Commons represents a major step forward for the CCLC in achieving the Center’s full campus design and will result in some exciting opportunities for program expansion in the coming year. If all goes as planned, this building will open to the public in February 2007. People can look forward to a greater variety in our existing programs, including additional school field trip options, community education classes, and summer school courses; plus new programming such as summer nature & art camps for youth, vacation camps for families, arts immersion programs for people of all ages, and more.”

The CCLC began planning and raising funds for the Community Commons four years ago. Half of the project is being funded through a State of Maine Community Development Block Grant, for which the CCLC held a series of public hearings and secured the support of each municipality around Cobscook Bay. Additional funding is being provided by USDA Rural Development, The Betterment Fund, Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation, CF Adams Charitable Trust, Community Foundation of Silicon Valley, JTG Foundation, Maine Humanities Council, Maine Library Fund, Machias Savings Bank, and individual donations and volunteer time.

“We need help from community members to finish out this project,” reports Furth. “We are looking for volunteer support to help paint and shingle the building.” Those interested in helping are encouraged to call Mary or Kara at the CCLC, 733-2233. To find out more about the CCLC or see construction pictures of the Community Commons, visit the CCLC’s website at www.thecclc.org or stop by the campus, 10 Commissary Point Road off Rte. 189 in Trescott, Monday – Saturday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
