Cobscook Community
Learning Center
A citizen's group of activists, educators, and parents ("Cobbies")
from the
Cobscook Bay region of Eastern Washington County, Maine came together
in
1999 to develop a learning center that would enhance the quality
of life of
area residents. The CCLC has plied elements of Folk, Indigenous
and Popular
Education in shaping a mission, vision and set of guiding values.
Serving
both the local and global community, the CCLC incorporates the arts,
the rich
local social fabric, dialogue, and experiences with the land into
all its programs.

State. In addition, the Department is responsible for the establishment
and enforcement of rules and regulations governing fishing, hunting,
and trapping, propagation and stocking of fish, acquisition of wildlife
management areas, the registration of snowmobiles, watercraft, and
all terrain vehicles, safety programs for hunters, snowmobiles,

Downeast
Lakes Land Trust
The woods and waters of the Downeast Lakes region
are like no other. Grand lakes abound, with names like Pocumcus,
Wabassus and Sysladobsis, reminiscent of the region's Indian heritage.
Rushing streams feed lakes so clear you can see a salmon 12' below
the surface. Fishermen ply these waters in the famous square-stern
Grand Laker canoes, built to navigate the wind-raked lakes. On distant
hills, stands of white birch, eastern hemlock and white pine attest
to the economic importance of the natural resources that first drew
settlers hundreds of years ago. Today the forest and fisheries continue
to sustain the unique community around Grand Lake Stream. Nowhere
in Maine are there more Registered Maine Guides. These professionals
provide a vital link between visitors and the complex ecosystem
of lakes, marshes, woodlands, bogs and the wildlife they support,
in a region scientists recognize as one of superlative bio diversity. |
