- Description:
There is a deep wild flow that runs beneath the surface of our lives in our largely secular culture. Most of us consciously come in contact with this current but rarely. These times can be challenging or even frightening, as well as numinous. They mark important turning points -- lighter, humorous moments along with dark nights of the soul. One way of describing spiritual autobiography is to say that it is writing about the self, or the selves, in confrontation with the unknown, during times of personal or social tumult, where spiritual does not necessarily refer to institutionalized religion.
Collectively we will be considering questions such as “What is autobiography?” “What do we mean by the word spiritual?” “What makes a self, and is it consistent?” “What really matters about one’s life?” Engaging with life as a spiritual journey we will work to recognize, reflect on, and relate to decisive and essential elements of our path and write about them. This course requires a commitment to spiritual exploration through reflecting, reading, and writing and a willingness to share what one discovers. There is the intention that we will support and learn from one another through this process, sharing laughter and tears as we witness one another’s stories.
Additionally, we will be reading spiritual autobiographies written in different time periods and in different cultures. We will touch on what has called us – and others – to do this sort of exploration and what it has to offer us. We have the opportunity to read some classics or can choose to stay in the more modern realm. This interplay of reading and writing will allow for connection and stimulation with the legacy of distant teachers.
