  • Instructor: Multiple instructors, see descriptions below.
  • When: Saturday, July 10 - 8:30 to 4:30.
  • Description: Welcome to the 2nd Annual Beautiful Day celebration at the CCLC. The event comes to you through the efforts of Hardy Girls Healthy Women’s outreach initiatives in Washington County. Based in Waterville, Maine, HGHW works to create opportunities, develop programs and provide services that empower girls and women. Following a phenomenal response to Beautiful Day in 2009, we are delighted to offer this as an annual event that illustrates the kind of programming both organizations are dedicated to creating. To learn more about HGHW, talk to their Director of Programs, Jackie Dupont, today. You can visit their website and join their mailing list at www.hghw.org. The CCLC’s mission is to sustain an educational setting within which people can cultivate understanding and enrich life through experiences in the natural surroundings, with our cultures and traditions, and through access to the arts. Programs and courses are offered at the CCLC throughout the year for women and men of all ages. To learn more, join the CCLC mailing. And, talk to CCLC Program Director, Kara McCrimmon, today if you have a course or event in mind that you’d like to see at the CCLC. Have a great day!

Introduction to SoulCollage™ - Angelynn King
SoulCollage™ is a contemplative process by which an individual creates a deck of cards using images taken from magazines and other media. The deck is similar to a large tarot deck, but instead of using predetermined themes, the creator chooses images that are especially meaningful to her. The cards can then be dealt and read, employed as writing prompts or foci for meditation, or used for other forms of introspection and inspiration.
In this introductory workshop, Angelynn King will lead participants as they create one or two cards for their personal decks and experiment with some basic card-reading. No artistic skill is necessary, and all materials will be provided. Just bring yourself and your inner vision!
For more information, visit the SoulCollage™ website at www.soulcollage.com

Powered By Girl: Moving From Media Literacy to Media Activism – Lyn Mikel Brown, Ed.D
Marketers and giant media corporations are working hard to target girls, narrowly defining what girls should wear, how they should act, and what their interests should be. We all need to be savvier about these media messages, but girls can move beyond just understanding that a message is false or an image is photoshopped to standing up and speaking up for themselves and other girls.  Dr. Brown will show media images and talk about the ways that marketers target girls, selling them a narrow version of girlhood.  She will then introduce Hardy Girls Healthy Women’s new online project: Powered By Girl.  PBG is a teen girl-driven national media literacy campaign designed to give girls knowledge, creative tools, and opportunities to talk back and demand more realistic and positive versions of girlhood. We’ll look at what girls are creating online and how they are using humor and satire—and social media—to get their message across.
Lyn Mikel Brown, Ed.D. is a professor, community activist, mom, and author of five books. She is also a proud co-founder of the nonprofit Hardy Girls Healthy Women.

    Felted Bedwarmers – Laurie Baird
Here in Maine, we have many cold winter nights(spring & fall too). Having an old fashioned bed warmer to heat up on the stove and place at the foot of your bed makes for cozy comfy tootsies and an "all is well" feeling. Join fiber artist Laurie Baird to dip your hands in warm soapy water and laughingly and joyfully create art that is useful as well as beautiful, using a method that is centuries old. We will use all-natural soap and soft wool to create one-of-a-kind felt-covered bed warmers. They make lovely door stops too.

    Closing Ceremony (4:00-4:30)
Kara McCrimmon will lead us in a closing sharing circle at the bandstand. We’ll collectively reflect on the day, inviting participants to share writing, dance, song or a creation from the day. Let’s take this time to honor the beauty of the women gathered today, the women who have touched our lives, and to honor all the beautiful women in the world around us.
