Story of the CCLC Campus
The Cobscook Community Learning Center is situated on fifty acres of former farmstead and forest land in Trescott Township, Maine, between the towns of Whiting and Lubec. We purchased our 50 acre parcel in 2001 at a generous price from a former educator. (click to see the campus album) In 2002 eight area high school students worked under the guidance of a nationally recognized landscape architect to create the CCLC’s land use and campus plan (click here to see the landscape plan that group created). The plan includes five buildings – an office space, Commons building, dormitory, caretaker’s residence, and yurt classroom - situated in a ring on a 10 acre plot surrounded by 40 acres of sanctuary lands with trails to serve as an outdoor classroom.
The Buildings
In 2003 we secured the funds to build the first building, our Timber Frame office (click here to see photos of the Timber Frame office). That work commenced in the spring of 2004 with a community “barn raising” of the timber frame. We moved into our permanent home late that year and construction was completed in January of ’05.
Also in 2004 we went through the extensive procedures associated with securing a State of Maine Community Development Block Grant ($300,000) to construct the Community Commons, the second of our major campus buildings. Through 2005 and 2006 an additional $357,500 was secured through private foundations, donations, volunteer labor and federal funds through USDA’s Office of Rural Development for this project. The Commons will open to the public in February 2007 and will house our commercial kitchen, dining hall / large function room and two more studio rooms (click here to see photos of that project).
The campus will be complete with construction of our fifty-bed dormitory which is projected for construction in 2008. The Dorm, Commons, and Timber Frame buildings form an integrated whole, allowing us to deliver the full palette of programming envisioned for the Center.
